Getting Around Tuscany & Siena
The good news is that Siena has surprisingly ample parking for an Italian city; the bad news is that it’s fairly expensive and most of it is located far away from everything worth seeing (often beyond city walls). To rent a car (which is a good idea if you plan to tour the Tuscan countryside after or before the wedding), a driver must be at least 23 years old and carry either an EU license or an International Driving Permit.
Shuttle Service, Train, or Bus appear to be the best ways to get from Florence, Rome, Milan, & Pisa. We've looked into a few of the ways that make the most sense and have offered a few options below for our guest to look into.
AIRPORT VANS & SHUTTLE SERVICES
Tuscany Experts // +393913007783 / info@tuscanyexperts.it / http://www.tuscanyexperts.it
The Villa recommends "Tuscany Experts" as a reliable shuttle/transfer service to get people from the airports in Rome, Florence, Pisa and Milan to Siena. We encourage you to reach out as soon as you've booked your travel to inquire about reservations as this is the easiest way to get between the airports and Villa Cetinale.
Please let us know what your travel plans are as it might make sense to try to time these transfers so that they can accomodate more people to help with the overall cost.
Here is a guide to their pricing:
Transfer from Florence to Villa Cetinale:
SEDAN // Mercedes E class: euro 180.00
MINIVAN // Mercedes minivan: euro 200.00
Transfer from Rome to Villa Cetinale:
- Mercedes E class: euro 400.00
- Mercedes minivan: euro 450.00
All the prices include:
VAT / English Speaking Driver / Refreshments / One Tablet with Free WiFi for Journey
TAXI CAB SERVICES (SIENA)
RADIOTAXI // +39057749222 / http://www.taxisiena.it/en/
TAXI MERCI // +390577289044 / http://www.taximercisiena.it
Siena has taxis as well, which can be booked in advanced through Radio Taxi or Taxi Merci, and there are taxi stands on Piazza Matteotti and outside the train station. Chauffeured limousine services are also available from Intercar, which is located on Viale Europa.
However, the historical center of town, with its numerous plazas and palaces, strictly prohibits automobiles and even bicycles. There is a small bus, the Pollicino, which is operated by TRAIN, runs from outside the city to a few central streets in the town center, but its limited stops and 30-minute interval between buses make it impractical for sightseeing. Therefore, getting around will definitely require lots of hard walking, and as the city is built on a hill, be prepared for some steep inclines as you make your way around Siena.
RENTAL CAR COMPANIES (SIENA)
BICYCLE RENTALS (SIENA)
D.F. BIKE RENTALS // http://www.dfbike.it/en/
If you're enamored by the idea of taking a bike ride through the Tuscan countryside, this is a very reputable and well reviewed bike rental outfit in Siena that we recommend looking into. They are located in Siena outside of the city wall - on the peripheral road. They speak english - rent both mtn and road bikes - by the day or week.
